Brief History of Shenzhen

Modern Origins: Transportation Hub and the Establishment of Bao’an In 1914, Xin’an County was renamed Bao’an County. In 1931, the Guangzhou‑Kowloon Railway was fully opened, making Shenzhen Market a key transportation node between Guangdong and Hong Kong. In 1953, the county seat was officially moved to Shenzhen Market, laying the foundation for the city’s development.

Birth of the Special Zone: The Starting Point of China’s Reform and Opening-up. Shenzhen City was formally established in 1979. On August 26, 1980, the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone was founded, becoming China’s “window” to the outside world. It created a global miracle in industrialization and urbanization with the “Shenzhen Speed”.

City of Innovation: A Global Hub for Academia and Technology. Today, Shenzhen is an international center for technological innovation and a pilot demonstration zone. It boasts top research institutions, high‑tech industrial clusters, and an international academic exchange environment, welcoming scholars from all over the world.
